Effortlessly Luxurious Lavender Hair Oil

Today we are making our own luxurious lavender hair oil. This oil can be used for both skin and hair making it a great two-in-one product! This formula only requires the use of two ingredients (avocado oil and lavender petals). However, you can customize it by adding a mixture of oils and even essential oils to your preference. Just be sure not to use too much essential oil in your lavender oil.

Essential oils have a safe usage rate, which is usually up to 1% for hair products and oils for the skin. For example, if you are making 100 grams of an oil your essential oil usage would be 1 gram total (100 x 0.1 = 1 gram). So if you wanted to add 2 essential oils to your product you would have to divide their usage between that 1 gram in the above example. Therefore, you could use 0.6 grams of orange essential oil and 0.4 grams of rosemary essential oil or any combination you like.

Benefits of Lavender:

When used in cosmetics lavender may be an anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, deodorizer, soothe the skin, reduce dandruff, and aid in wound healing. The use of lavender in aromatherapy may lift one’s mood, relax, and act as a decongestant.

Selecting the Appropriate Oil:

For this formula, I will be using avocado oil. Because this oil will be heated for a long time, even though only over low heat, I am choosing an oil with a high smoke point. The higher the smoke point of an oil, the less likely it is to burn at a higher temperature. The smoke point of avocado oil is approximately 520 degrees Fahrenheit, which means the oil will likely burn at 520 degrees.

Additionally, avocado oil has many beneficial properties for hair and skin. This oil has a low comedogenic rating, meaning it is unlikely to clog pores, making it a great oil for acne-prone and normal skin. Another reason I love avocado oil is that it is rich in key nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, and Vitamin E. Finally, avocado oil is one of the few oils that can actually penetrate the hair shaft instead of just sitting on top of the hair strand.

While avocado oil is one of my favorite oils for this formula, feel free to select another oil. There are several oils with similar comedogenic ratings and high smoke points that can be substituted here. For example, sunflower oil and grapeseed oil both have an even lower rating on the comedogenic scale and also have the ability to penetrate the hair shaft. On top of that, they are both lightweight oils that are non-greasy. Although, you may want to avoid the use of olive oil and coconut oil, as they may cause dandruff to worsen in some people.

How To Get Started:

To make this lavender oil we will slowly infuse it with lavender petals. You will need a heat-safe glass container such as a jar or a heat-safe measuring cup and a pot.

Next, add your chosen oil to the glass container and place the lavender petals inside the container. Add 2-3 inches of water to your pot and heat on low. Cover the glass container with foil or plastic wrap and place it inside the pan with the water inside of it.

Slowly heat this mixture for 1-2 hours depending on your desired infusion intensity. Add water when needed so the water level doesn’t get too low in the pan. Be careful not to burn the mixture!

Once the oil has reached your desired infusion strength, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool. When the oil has cooled completely transfer it to your desired container.
